Family Places to Visit in Austin for a Weekend Getaway

We recently took a quick weekend trip to Austin, Texas in May and it was very much needed. I grew up in Dallas and I took a day trip to Austin last summer, but this was the first time in my life that I can remember going and getting to explore the city. Now when you think about ATX you immediately think about SXSW and 6th Street, but that’s only a few of the things that Austin has to offer. It’s actually very family-friendly and Alora and I definitely enjoyed our time there! Today I’m going to break down our trip and give you a few recommendations for you and your family if you ever find yourself in the ATX.

Canopy by Hilton Austin Downtown

Located righted on 6th street this hotel is located in an amazing area surrounded by restaurants. The canopy is gorgeous and has amazing amenities such as an infinity rooftop pool, and a restaurant attached to the hotel, Verbena which serves yummy cocktails and food that will leave you in a food coma. When we arrived we were greeted by valet and all of the staff was nice and very helpful. We started our trip with dinner at Verbena and the service was amazing. I had the “wish you were here” cocktail and we decided to eat shareable: Moroccan Meatballs and Three Cheese Flatbread! Alora approved of both plates and that is a plus because she’s really hard to please lol.

The Canopy offers complimentary coffee and muffins every morning, valet parking, and a full gym. Our view was of the city so we could see everything going on throughout the day and it was nice to see everyone enjoying Austin nightlife!

Taqueria Mucho

We were taking a walk down 6th street and stumbled upon this cute taqueria! This restaurant was an absolute vibe that came with all the best photo backgrounds. We decided to stay and eat and I’m so glad that we did. Everything in the restaurant picks including the tortillas for your tacos. I had pork tacos and I tried two of their signature drinks and we had the best time. They offer inside and outdoor seating and we were told that the brunch is to die for. I can’t wait to go back because everything from the food to the music was good.

Austin Aquarium

If y’all haven’t figured it out yet, Alora and I love a good aquarium so of course, we had to take a trip to the Austin Aquarium while we were in town. This aquarium is a little bit different though. It is an interactive experience meaning you can touch most of the animals that they have and they even have some just sitting out that you can go up to and have a quick chat if you’d like lol! Alora loved every minute of our trip and she wasn’t afraid to touch anything. You have the options to feed/touch the stingrays, feed the birds, attend a princess sing-a-long, meet mermaids and get a glitter tattoo, and end your visit by receiving a fish pedicure. The Aquarium has a food court so you can stop and grab a snack in the middle of your visit and a gift shop where you can purchase souvenirs for all ages. I won’t lie, I was a little nervous to pet all the animals, but Alora on the other hand, couldn’t get enough.

The Austin Aquarium is open daily from 10 am-8 pm. I recommend purchasing your tickets and tokens online ahead of time to make your entrance smoother. Also, the aquarium does not take cash, so make sure you bring your debit card!

The Backspace

We really had a taste for really good pizza and The Backspace did NOT disappoint! This Neapolitan pizzeria is in the cutest backspace that offers an intimate dinner setting. The pizzas are made out of Italian-imported flour and cooked in a brick oven. The wine list is great too and they offer half-off glasses of wine and bottles from 5 pm-7 pm. The Backspace is open for dine-in, to-do, and delivery Tuesday-Saturday 5 pm-9 pm. You NEED a reservation because they fill up quickly!

Voodoo Doughnuts

After enjoying dinner at The Backspace we headed down the street to Voodoo Doughnuts. I had heard all about them and seen them on tv. The line was out the door when we arrived and we decided to wait and the wait was worth it. We got half a dozen but I really wish we’d gotten more lol. All the flavors sounded amazing but we went with Dirt, Raised Glazed, Oh Captain, My Captain, Powdered Sugar Cake, Sprinkle Cake, and Blueberry Cake and they all were a 10/10.

Our trip was filled with good food and fun vibes and I cannot wait to go back.

Have you ever been to Austin, Texas? If not, would you ever consider visiting?
